The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System is one of the masterpieces of architecture and engineering in Iran. This complex includes 13 interconnected historical structures such as bridges, dams, mills, waterfalls, hand-dug canals, and large water-guiding tunnels. These structures were built from the Achaemenid to the Sassanid periods for water exploitation. The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, registered as Iran’s 10th UNESCO World Heritage Site under number 1315, is located within the city of Shushtar. It meets criteria 1, 2, and 5 and is listed as a single entity in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This complex has been referred to as the largest industrial complex before the Industrial Revolution by the renowned French archaeologist, Madame Jane Dieulafoy.
