The Pyramids of Egypt are among the most important and magnificent structures remaining from ancient Egyptian civilization and are considered symbols of this civilization. By 2008, 138 pyramids had been identified in Egypt, most of which are tombs of pharaohs and their queens from the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. The three great pyramids of Egypt are located in an eight-kilometer area on the Giza Plateau, alongside several smaller pyramids and the beautiful and famous statue of the Sphinx, the largest monolithic statue in the world. The first pyramids built in Egypt are located in Saqqara, northwest of Memphis, and the oldest of them is the Pyramid of Djoser. The most famous Egyptian pyramids are the Giza pyramid complex, located in the Giza region on the outskirts of Cairo, and are considered among the largest structures ever built in human history. These three pyramids are the only remaining structures among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still exist. The Egyptian pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, are milestones in ancient Egyptian architectural style and are also considered symbols of Egypt.
